The line has changed quite a bit since the 1970s when it first came to my attention. Then it was in decline and being deliberately neglected prior to the attempted closure, but since its reprieve in 1989 it has seen a lot of investment, change and development. The pictures here were taken between 1976 and 1989.
The creation of the Settle-Carlisle Railway Conservation Area helped to inspire the project to document and record the history of all the structures along the line. This is a massive effort taking many years with many contributors, including me. The result is a growing and very accessible website of photographs taken over many years, equally valuable for enjoyment, curiousity, reference or historical research. See the SCRCA website .
